Carrier Safe is a health and safety assurance review independently conducted by the EEF (Engineering Employers Federation) for Carrier Transicold (UK) Limited – part of a global leader in refrigerated transport solutions.
This development programme aims to cultivate a positive health and safety culture throughout Carrier Transicold UK’s network of authorised service partners – independent companies operating through authorised service workshops that provide support to customers using Carrier Transicold equipment – and promote continuous improvement in health and safety protocols
In addition to manufacturing transport refrigeration systems, Carrier Transicold UK also delivers aftersales service to customers operating its machines through an expansive network of 22 authorised service workshops in the UK and more than 160 mobile service engineers.
As such, Carrier Transicold UK has a legal duty under the Health and Safety at Work Act to ensure that all service, repair and maintenance work performed on its transport refrigeration units is performed by contractors (its authorised network) who are competent from a health and safety standpoint.
To maintain a consistent and effective level of health and safety compliance across its network, Carrier Transicold UK introduced Carrier Safe – a comprehensive assurance review designed to showcase the company’s commitment to improving health and safety procedures.
The programme was developed in conjunction with Carrier Transicold UK’s health and safety advisors, EEF (of which Carrier Transicold UK is a member), after the company sought legal advice on the intricacies of using independent maintenance providers as part of its service partner network. There was also a belief within Carrier Transicold UK that this was the right thing to do to help ensure safe working environments for its service
Carrier Safe was developed after Carrier Transicold UK and EEF were unable to find a suitable ‘off the shelf’ product that could prove that the highest levels of health and safety compliance were being targeted. Many existing programmes were based solely on questionnaires and documented evidence that did not require any verification. Carrier Transicold UK insisted that its health and safety policy would be far more in-depth, involving on-site visits aimed at proving the application of and adherence to all procedures.
Starting with a blank canvas, Carrier Transicold UK worked closely with EEF to create an assurance review built around a comprehensive 172-point health and safety checklist. The Carrier Safe programme covers a wide range of topics, including legal requirements concerning health and safety protocol and legislation, as well as Carrier Transicold UK’s internal health and safety procedures. It is designed to provide a satisfactory level of assurance to every customer that all Carrier Transicold UK service partners are both competent and compliant in regards to health and safety.
